Nothing is written to disk in between. The result is a migration that behaves less like a file transfer and more like a live, continuous copy — one that preserves the mailbox exactly as it was.
Why “Zero Fidelity Loss” Actually Matters
Most people who’ve used a basic import/export tool before have run into the same set of frustrations:
- Folder structures collapse. Nested folders get flattened into one giant, unsorted pile.
- Every message becomes “unread.” Suddenly your inbox shows thousands of unread badges, even though you’d read all of it years ago.
- Date reset. Messages from 2019 suddenly show today’s date, breaking any conversation you’re trying to trace historically.

How It Works, Step by Step
The process is designed to be approachable even if you’ve never touched an IMAP setting in your life:
- Connect your source mailbox — enter your IMAP credentials for the account you’re moving from (Gmail, Outlook, cPanel, etc.). If your account has two-factor authentication enabled, you’ll generate a 16-character app password rather than using your normal login password.
- Connect your destination mailbox — the account you’re moving your mail to. This can be a completely different provider than your source, or simply a new account on the same one.
- Run a free pre-flight check — before touching a single byte, EmailMigration walks through a short readiness checklist: confirming IMAP is enabled, verifying your destination mailbox has enough storage to receive everything, and running a zero-write dry run that previews exactly what will move, without altering the destination at all.

Built for Scale, Not Just Small Migrations

The only thing retained afterward is a lightweight list of which message IDs were already copied — enough to make a resumed migration skip duplicates, without storing any subject lines, senders, or message content.
